Bob's Tournament Recaps

Our Last Two Tournaments, Feb. 24 at Burlington-Edison
and Mar. 2nd Power League at Kent-Meridian

The Burlington tournament was a good one for us.  We showed progress against Island Fire, and we played superior ball against our other two pool opponents.  Finishing second in the pool was a first for us this year.  In losing to Burlington in the Championship playoffs we were in good company ... they won their other two matches and took first place in the tournament.  The thing that was lacking in our game was an ability to hit the ball hard and end the volley.  Our passing and defense were good, but against the top echelon teams, we just weren't able to score.  These will be the focus of our practices for the rest of the season.  We will be working on our setting, mainly making it more predictable, and we will work on putting some more speed into our spikes.

The Power League tournament was a bit of a let-down after our showing at Burlington.  We were shorted-handed over the course of the day, and we got off to a bad start with just seven players for our 8 am match against NW Jrs. Vortex.  But over the course of the day, with some late arrivals balancing out some early departures, we just managed to field a team in each of our matches.

The good thing was that a lot of our youngsters got to play, and they played a lot.  Taylor M. set for all ten of our games, and Jessica and Vanessa did good work sharing duties as a substitute setter in seven of our sets.  Our best team match of the tournament was our 11 am match with Space Needle Fuego.  With Alexis and Taylor setting, we won the first game 25-22.  But Alexis had to leave after the first set, and we were basically reorganizing in the second set, which we lost rather badly.  However, in the third and deciding set, with Taylor and Vanessa setting, Sarah and Jessica in middle, Tay and Erica outside, Yazmin as libero, and Ashton as our backup for middle and outside, we battled even with Fuego before finally falling 16-18.  In the afternoon, we gave Power Surge a battle in the second set, but lost 23-25 when three consecutive servers failed to get their first serve in.  This was due, no doubt, to fatigue.  We had been down to seven players since Noon, and the last game was played with just six.  We salvaged the day with a victory over South End Juniors (playing in the Mill Creek slot) in the final match.  The teams that will be going up to the next Division at the final Power League event are Vortex and Space Needle.  So we had the tougher pool.

See you all at practice on Tuesday!

Power League, Feb. 2nd, Franklin Pierce H. S.

Yesterday was good day for us. We played well most of the time in pool, despite our 0-3 match record (1-2, 0-2, 1-2). The thing that hurt us in pool play was our poise and consistency. We played very evenly with all our opponents, but we lost our focus when it came down to the deciding points. This is not unusual for any new team.  One of the reasons I like the power league so much is that as our team gets better, we will have more and more opportunities to experience this kind of mental pressure, and with this repetition, we will get better at handling it. The Evergreen White team that we lost to in the third set (22-25, 25-23, 12-15) and Veritas from the other Navy pool were the finalists in the Navy championship match, and both will be moving up to the Black division for the March Power League tournament.

Our play in the afternoon bracket was much more consistent than in the morning pool play. Our two-set victories over Evergreen Jr.s Green, and the Olympic Premier team (out of the Kitsap Pavilion, Bremerton) were both hard fought, and we played with a great deal of poise. Our only let down in the mental game came mid-way in the second set of the final match against OPVBC. It was good to see us settle down and finish the match with some tough serves and steady defense. This was the team we lost to in our first match of the morning pool, so this victory was a real sign of progress.

Everyone played well, and showed improvement.  We are obviously a very strong team when we have all three of our big hitters, Nikki, Sarah and Jessica.  But when Sarah left, we showed that we are able to deal with considerable adversity when we work together as a team. Our new players, Ashton, Erica and Taylor M. all put in some quality efforts in the pool phase of the tournament. We lost to Space Needle 25-27 with Erica and Ashton playing outside hitter and Tay playing Libero.  That set could have gone either way. Erica did an especially good job of playing defense, with a number of dives to try and dig tough hits and deflections. Taylor M. did a good job of setting, making some great decisions and good sets. In the playoff phase of the tournament, the turning point in the final match of the day against OPVBC came when Taylor gave Alexis a chance to unwind and get reset for the final push. Prior to that time, OP had run five or six points on us, and after that we slowly edged ahead of them for the victory.

Sports for Youth, Jan. 27th, Highline Community College

We showed in our first match that we are capable of playing a high level of volleyball.  We could also see that we weren't as consistent as we need to be to play at this level.  We need to focus on several things at practice this week:

Take care of the little stuff ... make great passes on easy balls.  B^3.
Keep the ball in play ... give our opponents a chance to screw up.
Serve tough and in.
Cover our hitters.
Finish the volley when the opportunity presents.  We have some great hitters.
Be patient.

Finishing second in a U18 Silver division is a good result for us, but we could all see that a few small improvements would have made for an even better finish.  Make the commitment to learn your position and to anticipate.  We will be a great team when we get consistently good performances from all our players all the time.  Demonstrate at practice that we are ready to move on to the next level.

Power League, Jan. 5th & 6th

Coach Bob:

We played the first two days of the Power League shorted handed, usually with just seven players.  We kept the offense as simple as possible, with Alexis and Angel setting a 4-2, and we used Nikki as a middle blocker.  On Saturday, we really struggled with our consistency and poise.  In a couple of sets, we gave our opponents more sideouts by service error than they earned with a pass, set and a spike.  But even so we had some encouraging highlights like Nikki's blocking.  In the second day we began to make some big improvements in our serve receive, our serving, our dink- and block coverage, and in our team play.  In the final matches Sunday afternoon, our setters did a good job in delivering the ball to our outside hitters, our passing was on target, and all our hitters and middle blockers were very active and aggressive.  We served tough and without error.  We also began to do a good job of converting digs into offensive plays.  The difference between Saturday and Sunday was enormous.

Some "snapshots" of the last match:  Taylor making a jumping overhead dig of a deep dink ... Sarah receiving serve overhead and making some great passes ... Nikki crushing the ball ... Alexis and Angel both making a number of terrific sets to our middle and outside hitters ... Sarah and Jessica being very active and effective in the middle ... Jessica placing her spikes into the open spots in the deep corners ... Alexis, Angel, Taylor, Yazmin all diving and pancaking to bring up dinks and block deflections ... Angel setting the block in the #2 position ... Taylor and Vanessa reading deep serves and using good footwork to get back to make great passes ... Alexis converting a dig into a kill by Nikki.

We need to build on this foundation for our next round of play.  High on the list are the continuing need to perfect our passing and serving.  Also, we need to develop a little more power and to hit to the open spot when we hit over-passes.  Far too many of our spikes of over-passes resulted in digs.  Our floor skills are improving, and we will need to continue to improve our ability to convert these digs into into powerful attacks.  We will also work on our blocking.

In the next few weeks, we will work on progressively more advanced skills and techniques, and we will begin focusing on team play.  We will use the 6-2 more and more as our comfort level with transitions and coverage improves.  It is critical that each player works to master these new elements so that we can avoid undue revisiting of previously covered material.
