Ed's Tournament Recaps

Evergreen Jr.'s Tournament (Evergreen St. College)

RETOOLING: Call it what you want - rebuilding, reloading, whatever. However you put it, Dash Point is fielding a young team compared to the other club teams in this region.  We are competing with only a hand full of players with prior club experience, and catching up in experience is a challenge.  We have to remember that we are a young team and are making strides in the right direction ... getting better.

After all is said we have to get back in the gym at keep plugging away. I need to remind myself, we are young, we are in ages from 14-16 playing in a very tough division.  As our Mantra says “Every Day, Every Play, Get Better”

Some Thoughts on our Last Two Tournaments (2/24 & 3/1)

At 2 1/2 months removed from the start of a rebuilding process, our Dash Point VBC team is striving to move another step or two forward.  The process is difficult, and it moves us into some issues.

I know we're going to be better.  The ONE big thing we need to do is learn to close the deal. There were too many games this year in which we led late and still lost. A good team can't do that.

Every team has its own way of going about its business, and this team will have to make some changes in terms of its playing style.  To use a baseball analogy, we are not a home run hitting team, but we play like we were.  Our team will have to manufacture runs.  We will have to be a more stable and a consistent ball-handling and serving team. We have to build on that.

Our team, is a young team, and the great thing about us is our commitment to do everything possible to make this a better team.  I'm very confident that we have the right attitude coming into practice.  Now we need to start to believe we can do it, and play with the poise that comes from that kind of confidence.

All I know is we have to keep moving forward.  We’ll get back in the gym Tuesday and work at getting better, Every Day, Every Play.

Power League, Feb 3rd

First I want to make sure that I thank some people who have been very helpful to me.  At the top of this list is Sarah Stuart. She is an awesome kid giving me rides to and from practices and tournaments, an arm to hold when I need it, and doing all the on-court assistant coach duties that are a bit beyond my strength right now. Then Bob Stewart who has this passion for this sport of volleyball and is open to learning and discussing this great game. We (Bob and I) understand that we have a lot of growth ahead us.

There is a tremendous meaning in what we accomplished this past weekend. It is big in a number of ways. It’s basically just another step in the right direction, but it took a lot of effort by a lot of players, and it wouldn't have happened if we weren't working as a team, doing the things that the team needs. We also understand that there is more growth out there.

We haven't accomplished what we want to accomplish, but we have made progress and fundamentally that is the key. It is extremely difficult to become a great or even a good team, but if we follow our game plan day to day, Every Day, Every Play, Get Better……. We will get better

This group of players has some depth, and a desire to win. I saw some of this the past weekend, but I say it's the team's drive for success that sets them apart. I appreciate their commitment, they want to get better as a team. It shows in what we are doing. And, if we really understand what's happening, it isn't just in volleyball. It's also in the classroom, it's off the court.

We have adopted this approach and we are making progress. We won't change our approach. If we keep doing what we have been doing, we will continue to get better. That is the foundation of our program.

GET BETTER

Power League, Jan. 12th & 13th

This weekend was a chance for us to see where we are.  I think as long as we come with the right mindset we will get better, and over this tournament I think our mindset improved.  I like where we are now, but we can always get better physically, mentally and emotionally.

I want to make sure that we understand that we have a lot of growth ahead of us.  Sarah and I have always said we must always work at serving and passing.  It is extremely difficult to become a great team, but if we get the vibe and follow our game plan day to day, every play and every day, we, along with many other clubs, have a chance to win.

That being said, all I want to think about today is our Mantra:  "Every Day, Every Play, Get Better”.

We are setting standards that we are going to expect from all the players this season. I will tell you it is going to be uncomfortable ... there is nothing comfortable about being great.

With all that being said lets go out and have a great year.
